Description: Because of war swathes of Fizi territory, South Kivu, were abandoned between 1998 and 2006. During that time houses and schools were burnt, the adobe bricks melting back into the earth from which they came. With AVSI and the community UNICEF is rehabilitating or rebuilding 7 schools in the south east of the territory. We monitored 2 school construction sites in Kilembwe. On the site the builders were digging out the rich red earth, wetting it, moulding it and baking it, to make the bricks of the new school. I watched in fascination as the raw materials of a school were coaxed out of the earth. Flickr Link: 100454533
Group Position: 136
Description: The Angkor Photography Festival organized a workshop for underprivileged children in Siem Reap, Cambodia that used two parallel streams of creativity: artistic photography and creative movement. The children are beggars because they come from homes with parents who are HIV+ or are the victims of land mine injuries. Choreographer Sangeeta Isvaran and art-therapist Paula Holme focused on relationships between photography, memory and dance in the workshop. Using associations of sound and movement, with self-portraits and environmental photos, the children developed stories that evolved into a multimedia performance using photo-projections, creative movement and poetry. This was shown at Wat Damnak, the monastery adjacent to the slum area where the children live, and was received by the public as one of the highlights of the festival. The workshop provided these children with a creative outlet that helped keep them off the streets. As a follow-up, we have initiated a long-term education program to help the children to escape poverty so they won't return to begging. The project is aimed at giving thirty children well-rounded educations including language skills, photography and performing arts. So far, the project has been entirely supported by the voluntary contributions of the participants of the Angkor Photography Festival. Until the project achieves self-sufficiency, we will continue to need financial assistance. If you feel, as we do, that this project has merit, any contribution you can make will be gratefully received. Description: ...our daily bread. I wonder sometimes if I open my mouth too much about issues for the hungry. I hope you bear with me, because that thought always follows with the one telling me that I must be a voice. Take a breath. Every 3.6 seconds, or the time from one breath to the next, someone in this world dies from hunger. That's 24,000 deaths a day, or over 8 and a half million deaths a year. These deaths are mostly children. 1 in 7 people of this world live in chronic hunger, which is defined as not having a single day of one's life receiving adequate nutrition. That's the same number of people that live in the world's developed nations. In my hands are 3 ounces of rice. The average person living in chronic hunger receives only this amount of food...daily. The fact is that we have a bountiful God, and it would be funny if it were not so sad that God has given us an earth capable of feeding every human a daily diet of 3,500 calories in grains alone. That's enough to make everyone fat. The sadness is that people still die from hunger. The United Nations knows this. Our governments' leaders know this. We have the distribution know-how to feed everyone. What is lacking is the moral courage of the people to say this is an injustice. As a Christian, I must remember that I pray for our daily bread, not my daily bread. I must fight the temptation to construct a life where the poor are absent, and I must not submit to a theology that makes me comfortable in a world where the poor are invisible. When I do not recognize the faces of the hungry as my brothers and sisters, and when I do not stand up to be the voice for those whose cries go unheard, how sadly ironic it is that I follow the petition to give us this day our daily bread with a request to be forgiven of my sins. ***** "The community which prays, 'Give us this day our daily bread,' and has as its constitutive sacrament the breaking of the bread in Jesus' name is by definition a community in service to the hungry. By virtue of partaking in the sacrament of bread, we become united with the one body of Christ among whose members are multitudes who are hungry. The question becomes not if but how we are going to share the bread on our tables with these hungry brothers and sisters." ~ Dr. Craig L. Nessan, Academic Dean at Wartburg Theological Seminary, "Give Us This Day" May 10, 2007 THE NEED - hunger THE ACTION - being a voice for the hungry NON-PROFIT - The ONE Campaign

Description: During a recent trip to Laos I was fortunate enough to be invited to a Hmong New Year Celebration in a small village outside Phonsavan. The Lao people were incredibly kind and welcoming but at the same time shy and cautious of us visitors. During the Vietnam War the United States carried out over half a million bombing missions over Laos leaving 15 of the 18 provinces heavily contaminated by unexploded ordinance. This particular region of Laos saw well over 150,000 tonnes of bombs dropped. The contamination of this land not only results in the death and maiming of innocent civilians but is also one of the primary contributors limiting long term development, food security, access to basic services and widespread poverty among the rural population. Defined as a daily income of less than one dollar per day, extreme poverty identifies individuals struggling for daily survival. These endemic problems are basic human rights such as food, water, shelter, education, and health. Those living in extreme poverty must rely on relief efforts to assuage their suffering. When these individuals are incapable of developing themselves without support, they are considered vulnerable. "isang kuha lang po ha" (just one photo sir). i smiled and took a shot as fast as i can because i didn't want her to change her mind. she was so happy and surprised that i gave her 50 pesos (1 dollar). most of the time they get 10 or 20 pesos in every bag they carry....and most are heavy shopping bags. "kuya nagkamali po kayo" (brother you made a mistake.) offering back the money. Description: Mo sleeps on the street, tired from begging late into the night. (video grab) SEEING SIEM REAP ©2006 S. Smith Patrick At the 2005 Angkor Photography Festival, independent filmaker S. Smith Patrick chronicled Cambodian street kids as their lives were transformed through the festival's photography and dance workshop.  It is a thought-provoking one-hour documentary delving into issues of poverty, global tourism, ancient and modern cultures converging, and art for social change around the lives of street children in the urban center of Siem Reap. To view the trailer, please visit: www.cinesmith.net   Rhet, Go, and Vah are teens who provide their family’s primary income through begging or selling bootleg books and DVDs to tourists.  They leave their impoverished village each day and pull their carts to the main tourist strip of Siem Reap, a small city thriving on tourist trade from the nearby ancient Khmer temple site, Angkor Wat. They are part of a population of children of beggars, landmine victims and parents who are HIV positive, and who are the primary income earners of their families.  During long hours, they wait to make sales or receive coins and experience frustration and anxiety when they do not. Says Vah. ‘If I don’t sell books, there is no money for food.’   Tourists wander the streets and shops, visit temples, and dine lavishly in restaurants, often without understanding the lives of the people around them.  Seeing Siem Reap   The Angkor Photography Festival offers a workshop in which these ‘at-risk’ kids learn movement, dance, voice, and photography.  They learn to express themselves and to value what they have to say.   They struggle with language to express their feelings and to write a rap song.    We have no education, I want to go to school, We don’t want to beg, Cause that’s like cats and dogs.   ‘These words are about my real life,’ says Rhet.   Empowered as photographers, the kids re-discover their village, the marketplace, and the tourist strip armed with cameras rather than as beggars looking for help.  As Rhet takes photos at the market, her friend holds out a hat to gather change from tourists.    The kids create images from their surroundings - food cooked on an open fire, thatched huts, a landmine victim on crutches- revealing details of their lives as well as symbols of hope amidst the despair.  “I like to photograph flowers,’ says Go.  ‘Because they are beautiful.’   The barrage of images created by the kids, the camera toting tourists, and the festival professionals texturalize the narrative and exemplify varying perspectives.   The kids evolve from the tedious and relentless microcosm of the streets to being highly motivated to communicate about their lives to foreigners, and to improve their conditions. Go reflects, ‘I want to take pictures so that I can show tourists the real life of Cambodian people so that they can help us.’ The festival hosts the kids’ multimedia performance featuring original vignettes of creative movement dramatizing struggles in the kids’ lives as well as their rap song performed with a projection of their images.  It culminates in a high-energy dance piece that leaves the kids’ and the newly awakened onlookers motivated to turn the downward spiral of the impoverished community toward a better future.   The performance yielded a foundation for the kids’ education allowing many of them go to school for the first time.  Through the portrayal of this transformative time, Seeing Siem Reap is testimony to the transformative ability of creative expression, for both the participants and their surrounding community.     ................................................... S. Smith Patrick is a documentary filmmaker and photographer based in San Francisco, California. Her work focuses on human rights, social issues, and art for social change.
