Description: I caught a tender scene between mother and daughter refugees from Somalia while working with them at their homes. Shamsi is the only mother that we work with that has been able to adapt at all. She went as far as to get a job, and keep it. That is looked down on by the rest of her family and friends. She is setting an example for them, and her daughter. We are trying to teach that it is alright for women to participate in the community as well. Description: Because of war swathes of Fizi territory, South Kivu, were abandoned between 1998 and 2006. During that time houses and schools were burnt, the adobe bricks melting back into the earth from which they came. With AVSI and the community UNICEF is rehabilitating or rebuilding 7 schools in the south east of the territory. We monitored 2 school construction sites in Kilembwe. On the site the builders were digging out the rich red earth, wetting it, moulding it and baking it, to make the bricks of the new school. I watched in fascination as the raw materials of a school were coaxed out of the earth. THE NEED: return kids to school after 8 years of war THE ACTION: Construction of seven primary schools in Fizi Territory, South Kivu, D.R.Congo NON-PROFIT ORG: UNICEF project developer and AVSI implementing partner (http://www.unicef.org and www.avsi.org )

I can not imagine what those eyes have witnessed. Junjun, 10 years old, is the 3rd among six siblings. i followed him for a while and found a chance to talk to him "saan ka nakatira?" (where do you live}, i asked. "kung saan-saan lang po kami nakatira" (we live anywhere sir) "magkano kinikita mo sa pagkuha ng plastic? (how much do you earn from getting plastic bottles?), i inquired. "minsan po P60, minsan po P80...depende po" (at times 60 pesos, at times 80 pesos. it really depends sir - *about 2 dollars*.) i invited him to have a burger with me and we talked about other things. after finishing up his burger, he bade me goodbye. "sige po. thank you po sa sopdrinks at hamburger" (ok sir, thank you for the softdrink and hamburger) "ok, ingat ha."
